Materials
First, gather these supplies:
- Origami paper: You’ll need 6 sheets of square paper for this project. Common sizes are 6×6 inches (15×15 cm) and 3×3 inches (7.5×7.5 cm).
- Bone folder: Not necessary, but helps with making sharp, precise folds
- Glue or tape: Usually not needed for origami, but this project needs a little to put the snowflake together.
How To Make a Origami Snowflake: Step-By-Step
Step 1:
Start with a square piece of paper.
Step 2:
Then fold the paper in half.
Step 3:
Open the paper, then fold the paper in half again in the other direction.
After that, open up the paper once again to reveal two crease lines:
- One going across (horizontal crease line)
- One going up and down (vertical crease line)
Continue by folding the top-left corner to the center point.
Step 4:
Then fold the top-right corner down to the center.
Step 5:
Next, unfold your paper to reveal more crease lines.
Step 6:
Now fold the top-left edge to the closest crease line.
Step 7:
Then fold the top-right edge to the closest crease line.
Step 8:
Fold the top-left edge in again towards the horizontal center crease.
Make sure the edge of the paper lines up with the horizontal center crease.
Step 9:
Now fold the top-right edge in again towards the horizontal center crease.
Again, make sure the edge of the paper lines up with the horizontal center crease.
Step 10:
Fold the left edge in towards the vertical center crease.
Step 11:
Fold the right edge in towards the vertical center crease.
As a result, the edges should meet perfectly in the center.
Step 12:
Fold the bottom-right corner to the horizontal center crease.
Step 13:
Now unfold the last three folds.
Your paper should then look like the image below.
Step 14:
Fold the bottom-left corner to the closest vertical crease line.
Step 15:
Fold the bottom-right corner so that the bottom edge aligns with the first vertical crease.
Next, fold the rectangular piece of paper above the horizontal center crease downwards.
Step 16:
Fold the small remaining piece on the right inward to form a straight diagonal edge.
You should then see a straight diagonal edge, as shown in the picture below.
Step 17:
Fold the bottom-left corner to the horizontal center crease.
Step 18:
Next, fold the paper from the previous fold in half along the vertical crease line.
Step 19:
Unfold the last two folds you made.
After that, fold the piece in half vertically again – but this time, do not fold it completely flat. This will create a 3D shape.
Step 20:
Repeat this entire folding process another five times.
This will create all six parts needed for the 3D snowflake.
Step 21:
Next, join each snowflake part by tucking the bottom-left ‘lip’ of one into the bottom-right fold of the next.
Step 22:
The pieces should fit nicely together.
It’s best to assemble all the pieces first to check if they fit properly.
Once confirmed, you can disassemble them and use a little glue to fix them together securely.
Step 23:
To finish, repeat until all parts are connected.
Congratulations! You’ve completed your 3D snowflake!
