- The mesosphere is the third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere, located above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere.
- The mesosphere comes from the Greek word mesos which means middle. The mesosphere is part of the middle atmosphere between the stratosphere and the thermosphere.
- It has an upper boundary at an altitude of around 31 miles and a lower boundary at around 53 miles above the surface of the Earth.
- The top of the mesosphere, called the mesospause, is the coldest part of planet Earth’s atmosphere. Temperatures in the upper mesosphere fall as low as about -148 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the latitude and season.
- The mesosphere is also known for its interesting and unique atmospheric phenomena, such as noctilucent clouds, polar mesospheric clouds, and meteor showers, which are visible from the Earth’s surface during certain times of the year.
- The mesosphere is important for protecting the Earth’s surface from space debris and harmful solar radiation, as well as for regulating the planet’s climate and global circulation through atmospheric tides and planetary waves.
- The mesosphere cannot be reached by short flights and research rockets due to its high atmospheric drag and strong winds, but it can be explored by sounding rockets.
- The chemical composition of the mesosphere is mainly composed of gas particles such as oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, as well as a sodium layer and ice crystals that form ice clouds.
- The mesosphere is also affected by greenhouse gases which contribute to the Earth’s climate change and affect the temperature changes in the atmosphere.
- Unlike the lower atmosphere, the mesosphere contains very limited water vapor, which makes it a very dry region of the atmosphere.
