From bioplastics to on-the-go: Trends transforming cosmetics packaging

In response to evolving consumer demographics and purchasing behavior, the cosmetics and personal care packaging industry faces rising demand for sustainable, compact, and versatile solutions. In a recently released report from Smithers Market Intelligence, author Juan Rodriguez explained in “The Impact of Population and Demographics on Packaging: Long-term Outlook to 2050” that “increased consumer concern for the environment is leading to a demand for more sustainable packaging across various industries.”

The report highlights the cosmetics sector as a major driver of this trend, with demand spanning bioplastics, recyclable or compostable materials, and refillable packaging to address the dual challenges of sustainability and functionality. At the same time, lifestyle shifts—such as the rise of on-the-go consumption—are pushing brands to develop portable, easy-to-use packaging.

We spoke to Rodriguez for his insights into the key takeaway from the report for cosmetics and personal care product manufacturers and suppliers. This includes the dynamic brand response to consumer demands for more convenient, sustainable, and functional packaging requirements due to shifting consumer demographics and market dynamics.

Innovative packaging solutions respond to lifestyle changes

The demand for on-the-go packaging solutions is another critical driver in the industry. According to Rodriguez, “the impact of busy lifestyles on the packaging industry, particularly in high-income countries, includes the demand for smaller pack sizes and more portable packaging for on-the-go consumption.”

This shift is prompting brands to develop compact, leak-proof, and multi-functional packaging that appeals to consumers looking for convenience without compromising quality or sustainability.

Several packaging innovations have emerged in response to consumer preferences for sustainable, convenient, and functional packaging. Rodriguez identified flexible packaging as a leading trend, as it “is projected as the fastest-growing packaging material globally due to its versatility, eco-friendliness, and consumer appeal. ”

He added that bioplastics and compostable films are also gaining traction in cosmetics packaging: they offer brands an alternative to traditional plastics while meeting sustainability goals.

Reduced packaging is another area of focus, with brands minimizing secondary packaging to reduce waste and improve environmental impact. Rodriguez points out that companies are also “designing packaging for refill and reuse,” encouraging customers to repurchase only the product itself and refill existing containers. This lessens the environmental footprint and resonates with consumers who prioritize eco-friendly practices.

FMCG brands adjust to emerging market dynamics

In fast-growing economies, Rodriguez noted, “FMCG brands are adopting a nuanced approach to packaging in emerging markets, balancing the need for affordability and practicality with emerging trends in sustainability and consumer preferences.” As a result, flexible packaging and corrugated board are popular options due to their cost-effectiveness and durability.

At the same time, brands are focused on basic protection and hygiene standards to accommodate market demand.

Emerging markets are also steadily introducing sustainable practices, though the adoption rate may be slower. Rodriguez noted, “As these economies grow and infrastructure improves, there will be a gradual shift towards more sustainable packaging materials and practices.”

Countries such as India and China are expected to drive packaging sales as incomes rise and consumer preferences evolve, particularly in healthcare and personal care sectors, where demand for premium and sustainable packaging options is expected to grow.

Demographic shifts influence packaging design

Demographic changes, including aging populations and the rise of Gen Z, are shaping the future of cosmetics packaging. According to Rodriguez, “Products and packaging must increasingly be designed with seniors in mind,” prompting brands to create easy-to-open designs and clearly labeled packaging suited for older consumers.

He also explained that sectors like skincare and cosmeceuticals are experiencing growth as aging populations invest more in anti-aging and health-focused products, and packaging innovations are increasingly being tailored to these needs.

Gen Z consumers, known for their environmental consciousness, are further accelerating the demand for sustainable packaging solutions. Rodriguez concluded that “Gen Z’s influence will further accelerate the demand for sustainable and innovative packaging solutions within the cosmetics industry” as brands respond with ethically sourced and environmentally responsible options that resonate with younger consumers.
