Sources: Despite conflict, Leagues Cup to continue

The Leagues Cup is set to return in 2025 with teams from Liga MX and MLS participating in the month-long tournament during the summer, sources told ESPN.

Rumors of a potential pause began to emerge when Philadelphia Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said the team “is out of Leagues Cup” during a recent zoom call with media outlets.

Many also questioned the possibility of a summer tournament given that Leagues Cup coincides with the Gold Cup (June 14-July 6) and the FIFA Club World cup (June 15-July 13) in 2025.

But despite the potential scheduling conflicts, sources confirmed Leagues Cup is expected to be played in the summer months in 2025 just like the previous two editions.

The competition is likely to undergo changes for future iterations, sources added.

Inter Miami lifted the inaugural trophy in 2023, as captain Lionel Messi made his club debut against Cruz Azul before going on to lead the Herons to the triumph against Nashville SC.

In 2024, Columbus Crew defeated LAFC 3-1 at Lower.com Field to earn the title.

In addition to the trophy, the final two teams and winner of the third-place match earn places in the upcoming edition of the Concacaf Champions Cup, as well as prize money.
