Edible Camping Craft: Campfire Cookies


These campfire cookies are so much fun to make and even more fun to eat! They’re sweet, chocolatey, and even sour! All the best flavors in one edible craft. Kids of all ages will love making these campfire cookies. Though younger children may need a little more help then older kids will. Either way, this is a tasty, messy, camping craft everyone will enjoy. Make these campfire cookies at home or in the classroom or even at camp!

Campfire Cookies

This edible craft is simple and also doubles as a fun camping craft. Not only will your kids be able to be creative, but they’ll have a fun and sweet treat afterwards too! And it doesn’t take too many ingredients either, which is always a plus!

As mentioned before, younger kids will need some assistance with this edible craft, but prepping the candies beforehand will make it a little easier on them. So, without further ado, let’s make campfire cookies!

Ingredients Needed For Campfire Cookies

How To Put Your Campfire Cookies Together

Step 1

Campfire Cookies- Step 1- Put your cookie dough on a prepared baking sheet and bake- kids activities blog
Let your cookies bake on a prepared baking sheet.

Preheat your oven while you prep your sugar cookies. If making homemade sugar cookies then let them chill in the refrigerator before hand so they don’t spread as much. We used premade cookie dough and since the squares were smaller we rolled 2 squares together to make a larger cookie.

Step 2

Let your cookies bake for the time directed in recipe or on package. Then let them cool completely.

Step 3

Campfire Cookies- Step 2- Mix softened butter, powdered sugar, and milk together in a white bowl- kids activities blog
Mix your softened butter and powered sugar together and then add the milk to make it a more creamy consistency.

While this is happening mix the 1/2 cup of powdered sugar and butter. It’ll be almost dough consistency so add the milk to make it more creamy.

Step 4

Campfire Cookies- Step 4- Add 3 drops of green food coloring to your frosting-kids activities blog
Now add a few drops of green food coloring to your frosting.

Add 3 drops of green food coloring and mix well.

Step 5

Now lets prep the candy and snacks.

Then open and cut up your candies and snacks.

  • The gummy worms should be cut in diagonal slices, and then cut again separating the red and yellow.
  • The tootsie rolls should be cut in half and have all the shiny sides cut off of them. Dig in some grooves with the tip of your knife.
  • Cut your pretzel sticks into 3’s and then cut them again. You want smallish pieces.

Step 6

Now add some green frosting to your cookie.

Once the cookie is cooled off, add the frosting. Tap the spatula on top to make it have grass texture.

Step 7

Now add the tootsie roll logs.

Add your logs on the outside of the cookie.

Step 8

Now add your cut up red and yellow gummy worms to make a fire.

Now add your gummy worms to make your fire. You may have to dig them in a little to make them stay.

Step 9

Now add the “sticks” around your gummy flames.

Surround your fire with the pretzel pieces. It’s always important to keep your fire contained…and it helps the gummies stay up.

Craft Notes:

Do not give chewy candies to small children (ages four or younger) as they are a choking hazard.

Make these campfire cookies your own!

Like most crafts, you can make this edible craft your own! Here are some changes that would make these campfire cookies even more fun:

  • If you want flavored frosting you can add some vanilla extract or almond extract, but you’ll only want a small splash. This is optional and not necessary.
  • Like chocolate chips? Make chocolate chip cookies instead of sugar cookies.
  • Red and yellow gummy bears will also work.
  • Instead of pretzel sticks and tootsie roll logs, you could easily use halved whoppers candy as stones to contain your fire.
  • You could do this on graham crackers instead of cookies. You can make small campfires using a 1/2 or larger ones using full graham crackers.
  • Add a marshmallow to the end of a pretzel stick so your kids can “roast marshmallows.” Mini marshmallows are great for this.
  • Make sure your cookie dough is cold before using so the cookies don’t spread out. I know I said it before, but it’s kinda important.
  • Use semi-sweet chocolate chips to surround your fire like little stones.
  • A prepared baking sheet will keep your cookies from sticking. You can use a little oil or parchment paper.
  • If you don’t let your cookies get to room temperature the frosting will melt.
  • Unsalted butter will yield a sweet frosting then salted butter.
  • You can use gluten-free cookie dough too!

Our Experience Making These Campfire Cookies

We had so much fun making these campfire cookies.

My kids loved making these and my whole family enjoyed eating them. These campfire cookies are sweet, simple, and just a wholesome edible craft. My littlest one was not able to eat the candies, so she was given a sugar cookie and frosting. My other kiddos, on the other hand, had no issues with them.

We considered a few different ways to make fire and maybe next time we will try a different way like using fruit roll-ups or something! Who knows, but we will definitely be making campfire cookies again! Yum!

Materials

  • Favorite Sugar Cookies (Can be your favorite recipe, store bought cookies, or cookie dough, we used cookie dough.)
  • 2 Pats of Butter (softened)
  • 1/2 Cup Powdered Sugar
  • 1/2 TSP Milk or Water
  • Green Food Coloring
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Red and Yellow Gummy Worms (We used Trolli Duo Crawlers)
  • Pretzel Sticks
