Canelo Alvarez defeats Edgar Berlanga to retain titles

Canelo Alvarez defended his WBC, WBO and WBA super middleweight world titles with a victory over Edgar Berlanga on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) dominated the underdog Berlanga (22-1,17 KOs) for most of the fight until to win an unanimous decision with scorecards of 117-110, 118-109 and 118-109.

Alvarez was the undisputed champion at 168 pounds before the IBF stripped him of the belt in July after Alvarez decided to face Berlanga instead of the organization’s No. 1 mandatory challenger, William Scull.

Alvarez, 34, has won titles in four divisions, and he’s coming off a unanimous decision victory over Jaime Munguia in May. Since his May 2022 light heavyweight title loss to Dmitry Bivol, Alvarez has now won five consecutive fights, all by unanimous decisions.
