Axolotls were once easily found throughout the high-altitude lakes (Lake Chalco) surrounding Mexico City, but every square mile of their natural habitat is degrading. These adult salamanders, with their juvenile characteristics, are fish-like by nature. Amphibian legs, along with a dorsal fin and feathery external gills (sometimes pink gills), have earned the axolotl the name Mexican walking fish.

  5. Compared to mammals, axolotls are almost 1,000 times more resistant to cancer, which means they are being constantly studied in scientific research.
