12 Escapist Books for When the Real World Just Feels Too Overwhelming

It may only be March, but 2025 has already been relentless with the headlines. Every morning, as I wake up and read the news, it feels like playing a Mad Libs game where the blanks you need to fill in are “billionaire’s last name,” a “verb ending in -ing,” and a “horrible tragedy.” With all the chaos in the world, sometimes I just want to escape into someone else’s, even if just for a moment, for a little peace. Thankfully, using books to escape reality, I can do exactly that. These aren’t dense books that motivate you to improve your life or deep nonfiction dives into today’s culture to enrich your mind. Instead, they have such incredible world-building that you have to remind yourself they’re not real while reading.

Escapist books are so immersive that they make you forget about your own stressors as you get completely swept up in someone else’s. They feature rich fantasy realms, transportive historical settings, or plots so gripping you literally can’t think about anything else. So, if you, too, are overwhelmed by everything happening in the world, you’re in luck because I’ve rounded up a list of escapist books to help you disconnect. Here are 12 books to escape reality for when the real world is a little too… real.
